Lucky Wok

I saw some reviews of Lucky Wok saying they had authentic Chinese food, while at the same time General Tso Chicken is listed as one of the most popular items on the Google Maps reviews. I did not really get a chance to look at the menu enough to determine if some of it looked authentic, so I am not stating whether I think it is or not. I will state that I had two of their soups, both of which were some of the best I have ever had.

If this were not confusing enough, the server mentioned that they also have Hawaiian food because of the fact that the chef had lived in Hawaii for a while and learned how to cook it. The short story is that my traveling companion and I decided to get the Hawaiian food and see how it was.

The Food

Hawaiian style barbecue beef

Hawaiian style barbecue beef

The plate shown above is a dinner portion of Hawaiian food on top of a bed of rice. It had two items because they didn’t have enough chicken to make a whole plate (we had asked for a plate of chicken) It turned out that I thought the Barbecue Beef was the better of the two items , with the meat being tender enough to classify as “barbecue.”

Katsu chicken

The Katsu Chicken on the other half of the plate was just a little less impressive in the flavor department, although I enjoyed this dish also. Several other items were also available from the Hawaiian menu.

Wonton soup

I ordered Wonton Soup as an appetizer, and this turned out to be the best item I tried here. It had a good balance of flavors, particular with not being overly salty. This made me think that if I had ordered something from the Chinese menu I would have been extremely happy with it, in spite of the fact that it may have been Americanized Chinese food (and I don’t know whether this would be the case or not).

Egg drop soup

I also got some Egg Drop Soup for takeout. I thought this was excellent and another recommendation for ordering the Chinese food here.

Other Comments
I observed tables of people, including Asian people, having a leisurely and supposedly enjoyable meal here. Its popularity alone (not to mention its wonton soup) would indicate that it is one of Kansas City’s better Asian restaurants.
