Q39 on 39th St.

Kansas City has a number of barbecue restaurants that have been around for enough years to be considered an institution, but Q39 is one of the newer places that is consistently mentioned in polls taken of residents’ favorite restaurants. This restaurant is the original location, with another in Overland Park.

One thing Q39 seems to be determined to do is to provide customers a good dining experience as well as good food. They have a large parking lot which insures that as long as a table is available you will also be able to find a parking space. The dining room is full service and comfortable. If there is such a thing as a fine dining barbecue experience, Q39 has it.

Traditional barbecue only takes up a portion of the menu with items such as Smoked Pork Banh Mi opening another world of barbecue creations. Perhaps ordering after you are seated will prompt many people to try some of these dishes, not having the pressure of trying to decide on something while standing in line. It also seems that they are not likely to run out of certain items if you come later in the day.

The Barbecue

Brisket plate

I chose the traditional route for my first meal here–the brisket plate. It was actually more than the traditional brisket and is more correctly called the Certified Angus Beef Brisket Plate. You also get a bonus of burnt ends.

The Brisket was very good quality, as the name implies. I found it to be a little less flavorful than the brisket I had at Joe’s, but still very good.

The Burnt Ends, though, were a total flavor explosion and made one of the best foods I have had of any type. I have to mention that the sauce here is quite good and made the burnt ends even more impressive.

Side Dishes
The potato salad and beans were both good and maybe better than most. I was not paying much attention to them though when the meats are this impressive.

Recap
The burnt ends here are so good I even met a local who recommended it as the best barbecue item in Kansas City. From what I experienced, though, everything here is good quality and they know how to bring out the flavor.
