Pecan Grill

Pecan Grill is a rare thing to find near the intersection of Lohman and Telshor–a local restaurant. My theory is that local restaurants are usually better than chains, if not with the food then at least in the idea that chains are usually priced for areas with higher average incomes than in the El Paso-Las Cruces area.

Pecan Grill is a local restaurant that has been described as serving “Southwestern twists on American fare.” Several dishes here come with Hatch green chile, taking advantage of the locally grown crop. When looking at the menu an emphasis seems to be placed on starters, Happy Hour items, and bar drinks. When I came at lunch time the restaurant was almost empty, and they obviously have times in the day when it is much busier.

Large dining area can accommodate a much larger crowd than seems to come at lunch time

Dining area

There is an outdoor patio where dogs are allowed, smoking is permitted, and I suppose is where patrons can engage in the “other” product which is widely smoked in New Mexico although this is just conjecture.

The main menu looks minuscule compared to the appetizers and bar menu, but some of the dinner items look promising. I tried the Hatch Chicken Pasta hoping to experience a green chile feast. This is a linguine dish with house made alfredo sauce, bacon, and green chile. I was happy that this was a flavorful pasta dinner (the type of dish served in many “American” restaurants). The green chile, though, was so mild I don’t think it added a Southwest flair, but was more of a flare out. Still, though, it was a good pasta dish that was at quite a high level above bar food (much of the “bar” food looks good as well).

The bar area had quite a few television screens and seems to be a good place to watch sporting events. Personally I am sometimes on the lookout for places like this as the games I want to see are more and more broadcast on cable channels to which I do not subscribe.

Other Comments
I was somewhat impressed that the restaurant had items on the menu such as pecan crusted salmon, fish and chips, and a prime rib sandwich. The pizza looks good as well.

One of my local liquor stores sells a pecan beer, made in New Mexico, which I think is quite good. Pecan Grill also has a pecan beer along with other house made flavors which I think would be worth trying.

  1. We’re of the same mind that ” local restaurants are usually better than chains.” I’d go one further and declare local restaurants are always better. That’s my bias speaking, of course, but give me the name of a national chain and I’ll give you five local restaurants that are better.
