Whataburger is a place that I pretty much took for granted until my cousin and his friends came from Utah and wanted to go there as their first order of business upon entering Texas soil for the first time in quite a while. I always thought the food here was good but I admit that this incident gave me a little bit more appreciation for it.
I do not usually write reviews for fast food restaurants (and as is evident from the photo) these are restaurants that I frequently visit at night to minimize the possibility that anyone will recognize me there. Seriously, though, I think the burgers at Whataburger are respectable and that this would not diminish the reputation I am trying to establish of being a good judge of food.
One reason I am including this review is that I had quite a few experiences with hamburgers in Oklahoma, and I wanted to be able to compare this one with them. The short answer is that Whataburger was very good for the national chains, but I thought many of the local burgers in Oklahoma were a lot better (Johnnies, Interurban, Bricktown Brewery, etc.). I had a recent experience with Five Guys in Oklahoma, though, that made Whataburger seem like fine dining in comparison.
Burgers
I think there are many aspects of the Double Patty to like, and it shows that a fast food chain can keep up certain standards (although Whataburger is not as spread out as some of its competitors and is limited mainly to Texas). For starters the meat was fresh and had an actual beef flavor (rather than being like many that taste nondescript). In fact the whole burger was quite good and I was not disappointed in it until I was finished and noticed a slightly greasy taste in my mouth. The charcoal broiled hamburgers and others in Oklahoma have largely eliminated this aspect of eating burgers, but still the one at Whataburger was not bad at all compared to many others.
The lettuce and tomato on the burger had an actual flavor that was noticeable when I ate the burger, and this is one of the things I like about this restaurant. Also the fact that they use mustard as the default condiment means that I do not have to give them any special instructions or make any changes when I order the burger.
I have read on the Internet that the burgers at Whataburger are larger than most, and I did find them to be more substantive than most of the burgers I had in Oklahoma. I had the double patty here, but still I would say this burger is medium to large when it comes to size.
Fries
The Fries were fine and were not too greasy.
Other Comments
I have been coming to this restaurant for years, but this review is for my most recent visit in 2021. I do think that this experience, though, was pretty representative of the ones I have had in the past.
Although the restaurant is open 24 hours per day, they close a large part of the dining room at 8:00 p.m. and I found the remaining area to be more confined than I really like in the era of social distancing. I did not feel too crowded with the other customers who were there, but I just wanted a better choice of tables.
There were quite a few additional items on the menu, and I am sure I will be back to try some of them (and I know that in the past I have enjoyed items such as the chicken sandwich).
