El Paso, TX
After being impressed by the West Texas Chophouse on George Dieter Drive in early 2023, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that another branch of the restaurant was under construction in west El Paso. My first visit to the new restaurant in August 2023 confirmed that it had the same food I had experienced at the east side restaurant. Noticing that it is a chain, though (and also having a restaurant in Las Vegas), I also determined that it had the characteristics of a “local” chain which maintains high quality standards.
To convey what I really like about the restaurant I need only to recount an event that happened when a guest pastor from the Albuquerque area was filling in at my church when our leader was out of town. The guest speaker included a story in his remarks about the fact that he had received excellent hospitality including a meal at West Texas Chophouse. He stated that when he tried the steak there he “could hear the angels sing.” I am sure this did not come from the restaurant’s music system but was the same appreciation of the steaks I have had.
Setups
Bread is free and seems to be pretty generic, although I prefer it to the ones served at some other places such as State Line.
Steaks
The Sirloin Steak I ordered is one of the less expensive options, but it still points out the benefit of having the aged steaks that are served here. I found it to be very flavorful and tender, and a seeming indication that there are no bad steaks here.
Burgers
Some things about the menu are confusing to me with one being the difference between the Build Your Own Burger shown here and the lunch burger I had on another visit. In my opinion this one came out better because of two things for which I paid extra–cheddar cheese and green chile. The meat impressed me as being almost like eating the steak, and I thought this was a very good green chile cheeseburger.
The Lunch Burger was good as well although I think there is no option with it other than getting fries. It came with a default mayo sauce which I did not like as well as what I had the first time (I think just plain mustard). The Jack cheese with this one dis not work out as well as the cheddar I had the first time. Some of these choices are ones I can change although I do not think it comes with anything other than fries.
The green chile on this burger was spicier and better than on the first burger, leading me to believe that a lot depends on the chile crop. I do recommend getting green chile with the burger if you are into this type of thing. The price of these burgers is also quite reasonable compared to similar high quality burgers.
Sides
The Side Salad was good but pretty generic. Sides are one area where I think a competitor, Great American, has the edge (although the baked potato at this restaurant’s east side location was excellent).
Other Comments
This restaurant shows that you do not have to pay inflated prices for a premium steak. I consider these to be top tier steaks at less than top tier prices.
Out of the items I have tried at both restaurants I still look at the New York strip (a portion of the porterhouse) as the must try item here. The burgers are a great choice, though, when you are on a smaller budget.
