I recently had an experience with the frozen custard at Caliche’s in Alamogordo, reminding me of the enjoyment I get from one of my favorite frozen treats. Las Cruces is the home base for this mini-chain of custard, hot dogs, and other treats.
One of Caliche’s hallmarks is its variety of toppings and things you can add to the custard, but my taste is usually for the plain ones.
I had a great experience with the hot dogs in Alamogordo, but not so much here. I think there is more of a chance for variability of taste in the hot dog (which is cooked on site), than the custard (which I suspect is made in a central facility). I say this because the custard here was every bit as good as it was in Alamogordo.
Caliche’s is a take-out restaurant that has some benches outside where you can eat. Many find eating in the car the way to truly experience Caliche’s.
Hot Dogs
The Original Caliche Hot Dog uses a Nathan’s hot dog covered with various toppings. The one I had here had all the right ingredients, but it came out with a “greasy fast-food taste” according to my notes. This is in contrast to one I had in Alamogordo which was excellent. This seems strange considering that this is the original location of the chain.
Custard
I got a scoop of custard because I did not want to fill up on it–I just wanted to taste it. I would say the frozen custard at Caliche’s is the best I have ever had.
Custard is one of my favorite frozen desserts, and Caliche’s is one of the best at doing it.
Other Comments
Caliche’s has two things that are very hard to find–frozen custard and all-beef hot dogs. I happen to think the custard here is better than ones I have had elsewhere.
Caliche’s has been operating for a number of years and is a local institution in Las Cruces and Alamogordo. They tried operating in El Paso and I do not know why it closed, but in the end it may be good that the chain has stayed small with what I think is the quality you get from a local restaurant.
