Ardovino’s has been a popular restaurant in the city for decades. My first experience with it was in the original restaurant on Cincinnati Avenue where I thought this pizza had an edge over others in town because the delivery trucks bringing them supplies had New Jersey license plates. My most complete review is for the Resler location which has been my first choice out of the different locations for about the last 25 years (I think).
In any case, I had heard that the restaurant on Sunset Road was even better. If true, this must be something that has been occurring foe a long period of time because this type of rumor does not happen overnight.
I did think the dining rooms here were quite nice and that possibly the large amount of sunlight here made for better daytime dining, and one of my friends mentioned that this restaurant had a better atmosphere than the Resler location.
Soups and Salads
The Antipasto Salad is possibly my favorite salad here, and matched the salad at the Resler location exactly. I love the flavors of the lettuce, cheese, pepperoni, and Genoa salami complement each other. The olive oil based dressing is great, and the entire salad is very good.
I tried another salad or the first time here–the Garden Green Salad. Made with feta cheese, olives, and artichoke hearts, This was an excellent salad that was totally vegetarian (a rarity these days but worthy of giving it a try).
Sandwiches
A variety of sandwiches are available and at lunch they have specials that I think make them worthwhile. The special includes sandwich, choice of salad, and a drink for a good price (they also have pizza lunch specials).
The Spicy Roast Beef Sandwich is excellent with fresh bread and flavorful meat.. the “spicy” part was a blend of ingredients layered on top of the meat that gave it a good kick. I like a restaurant that delivers the goods when they say it is spicy, and here it comes with a great flavor as well.
Pizza
As I point out in the review of the Resler Ardovino’s., the restaurant does a large take-out business with pizza being the main feature. There is a large variety, and there are few that I do not crave once I have tried them.
Traditional Pizza
“Traditional Pizza” is the the first category listed on the menu, and the “one item” pizza available on the lunch menu would fall into this category. I found out, though, that for the lunch special you can order any type of pizza on the menu for an extra charge. For me the extra charge has always been one dollar.
Combinations
The “Combinations” include some good selections where you can get more for your money than you would ordering toppings separately on top of the regular pizza.
The House Combination includes some of their best toppings, and I could not do much better than this if I were making my own choices. It includes pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, and bell pepper. This is one of my favorite pizzas at the restaurant (based on my experience at the Resler location)..
Gourmet Pizza
The “Gourmet Pizza” category includes twelve combinations of toppings that the restaurant believes are particularly good. I have a list of favorites in the review of Ardovino’s on Resler.
House Favorites
I have found the “House Favorites” to really have the greatest number of good pizzas if I am leaving it up to the restaurant to put together a combination. The advantage of this is not only that they do a good job in picking the toppings, but also that the cost comes out lower than if you build your own pizza and have to pay for the toppings separately.
The Royal here was so good I think it was the best pizza I’ve had at any of the Ardonino’s locations. This comes with five cheeses, pepperoni, salami, and mushrooms, but no red sauce. I have not missed the red sauce on this pizza at all.
Additional Comments
With Ardovino’s I believe much of the enjoyment of someone’s experience is in the toppings that they choose on the pizza. I believe they have some of the best toppings in El Paso. I was very impressed with The Royal, but there are many more left to try here..
The sandwich and the Royal Pizza here have been better than at the Resler location. Salads have been about the same at both locations. Friends have told me that this location is a better than at Resler.
