AR’s Breakfast & Brunch

Mexican food is one of the most popular cuisines just about everywhere it is served, and it is not surprising that this would also be the case in the Kansas City metro. Increasingly, though it is not the Americanized versions of the cuisine that attract customers as much as those who make a good effort to serve it the authentic way. The crowds I witnessed at AR’s testify to the fact that it is popular, and I think it is because they give the kind of flavors that would be found south of the border.

The menu is extensive, and the list of breakfast choices seemed to be much larger than I find in many El Paso restaurants. The food here is also a different style than I usually find near the border, with a type of food I usually find in restaurants that serve Central or Northern Mexican cuisine. In other words it was more standard Mexican style than the regional cuisine to which I am accustomed in the El Paso/ Chihuahua region.

The spice level is a default mild to medium. I think you can get food that is spicier if you wish, but mine was just spicy enough to give it a good flavor.

The Food

Divorced eggs aka "huevos divorciados"

Although I was at the restaurant twice, including being among an overflow crowd wanting brunch on a Saturday morning, I only had one meal here which was Divorced Eggs, or huevos divorciados. The idea here is to serve two sunny side up eggs that are separated from each other, one with red sauce and one with green. These were topped with a red Mexican sauce and a green tomatillo sauce (classic Mexican style but very different than the chiles used in the El Paso region). Also classic Mexican style but seldom seen in El Paso were a bed of black beans and toppings of cilantro and queso fresco. I don’t know what to make of the fried potatoes that were on the bottom of the plate.

I thought the sauces were flavorful, made better by the queso fresco, black beans, and eggs. I was not a big fan of the fried potatoes at the bottom, but these were easy to avoid and the dish was very filling without them.

Closing Comments
The menu offers a number of good choices, and I can see why AR’s is popular. When I was there on a late Saturday morning, though, customers were standing in a line going out the door and filling up any free space that existed in the restaurant. I think this demonstrates the popularity of the restaurant with the local population, and makes me hope I can return and try some other items.
