Geogeske on N. Stanton Street

The publicity for Geogeske says it is a cheery hangout featuring creative, globally inspired pub grub. While I admire the high aspirations of the owner to give us quality dishes from around the world, this kind of restaurant makes it difficult to know what to order. It is even more difficult to write a review knowing that most of the items I have not tried are probably very different from the one I had. I had the assurance from a good friend, though, that whatever I got here would be good.

Apparently the cocktails are one of the most popular features here, and there are probably some food items that are customer favorites. My food experience, and probably more so the service, was along the lines of the many reviews I have seen. The common thread is that this is an uncommonly good restaurant.

Salads

My Salad was served as a “starter” in the sense that it came out before the main course, and this is how I usually like it. This was a fresh and high quality salad, and was included in the price of the main dish.

Specialties

Seafood enchiladas

Seafood enchiladas

I am not sure how they chose the items in the Specialties section of the menu, but they are all main dishes and it includes several steak and seafood dishes. The one I chose to order was Seafood Enchiladas, an item that tastes like it sounds but with an elevated presentation and very good ingredients. This is one of the best dishes I have had in the city. I thought the flavors and ingredients used in this dish could be found in quite a few restaurants in Mexico, but they would be the ones that would give you upscale home cooked style meals.

Overall Comments
The prices here were a little scary but I think they serve food that is a good value for what you pay.

Although the international aspect of the restaurant seems to be mostly Mexican, there are a large variety of dishes and it is hard to classify the type of food being served. I think “fine dining” might pretty well cover it except that the prices are not that high.

If I were a little short of funds I would consider ordering a sandwich or salad just to be able to come to one of the best restaurants in El Paso. In many ways I think this would be just as good as ordering one of the more expensive dishes.
